On August 10, 2023, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot launched the 'Indira Gandhi Free Smartphone Yojana' in Jaipur.

On August 10, 2023, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot launched the ‘Indira Gandhi Free Smartphone Yojana’ in Jaipur while inaugurating mobile distribution camps in the state for women empowerment.

Details of Indira Gandhi Free Smartphone Yojana

  • This Yojana has been started on the theme of ‘Knowledge is Power’. This will ensure access and connectivity of women to welfare Yojanas through smartphones. Along with benefiting themselves, they will also be able to do social service by making other women aware.
  • The objective of Indira Gandhi Free Smartphone Yojana is to provide free smartphones to the poor and weaker sections of the country. Under this Yojana, smartphones are provided to eligible beneficiaries without any charge.

  • Target: To provide mobile phones with internet to 1 crore 35 lakh Chiranjivi women of the state under Indira Gandhi Smartphone Yojana.

Under the Indira Gandhi Free Smartphone Yojana, 1 crore 35 lakh women of the state have been provided smartphones in two phases:

  • First phase: In the first phase, smartphones, SIM and data connectivity have been distributed to 40 lakh women through telecom service providers authorized by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). 
  • Second phase: In the second phase, the remaining 95 lakh women will get smartphones.

Main objectives of the Yojana

  • This Yojana is a unique initiative to empower girl students, widows and single women. This will increase awareness among women and they will play a greater role in the prosperity and progress of their families.
  • With the help of smartphones, girls studying in far-off areas will be able to study online while staying in constant touch with their families.
  • Beneficiaries will be able to easily obtain information about the benefits of various public welfare Yojanas.
  • Women will be made digitally literate through the Yojana, so that they can take advantage of all the Yojanas and do banking related work themselves.

Beneficiaries

  • Girls studying in class 9th to 12th in government schools.
  • Girls studying in college/ITI/polytechnic.
  • Women receiving widow/single woman pension.
  • Female head of the family who completed 100 days of employment under Mahatma Gandhi NREGA Yojana in the year 2022-23.
  • Female head of the family who completed 50 days of employment under Indira Shahari Rozgar Guarantee Yojana in the year 2022-23.

Benefit

  • Under this Yojana, Rs 6800 was transferred to the beneficiaries through DBT in the e-wallet app (Rs 6125 for the phone and Rs 675 for the remaining 9 months of internet data this year).
  • The beneficiaries can themselves choose the smartphone of the company of their choice.
  • Under this Yojana, you will get free internet connectivity for 3 years.
  • Free smartphones were provided to women and girl students.
  • A SIM will also be given along with the smartphone which will have internet facility for 3 years.
